The Douro region is occupied by 40000 hectares of vineyard area. It is in this area of Portugal that is produced one of the best red wines in the world.
There are red wine to be consumed young wine and wine "of guard". The red wine meant for consume has a ruby color. These wines are consumed in their first years after harvesting and are suitable to accompany meat dishes, cod-fish, pasta and pizzas. Did you know... ?

Did you know that there are still producers of red wine that tread the grapes in the winepress? Formerly, the red wine was all trampled by several men at the mill. Today, only the smaller, more traditional producers is that they continue to do so.

Despite being exhausting, men embraced each other, treading the grapes as they sang.

Gastronomy: Vinho verde (“green wine” or “young wine”) ou vinho maduro (“mature wine”)?

Source: http://eofdreams.com/wine.html
Did you know that the designation of vinho verde (“green wine” or “young wine”) or vinho maduro (“mature wine”) has nothing to do with the maturation of the grapes? «All wines are produced from ripe grapes and white wine is no exception.»

Such a difference only exists in Portugal!

Everything depends on the region: “young wine” if it has been produced in the Minho and Entre Douro (in the green wine region), “mature wine” if it has been produced in any other region.

«Basically allows to highlight the specificity of “green wines” compared to all others: the “greens” are lighter, fresh and generally less alcoholic wines.»

Red wine is one of the best of Douro. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Aragonez), Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão are the varieties of grapes that originate this wine.

Usually, Red wine is made up of different qualities. This is one of the characteristics of this type of wine. The mixture of this varieties of grapes results in a wine with a wonderful taste.

Such as the Port wine, there is red wine to consume young and guard ("de guarda").
