The "widows" have their origin in the former Convent of Remedies. The Franciscan nuns manufactured these and many other cakes, never revealing the recipe later discovered in the records of the expenses of the kitchen. Among the normal ingredients of a cake, the "widows" were made ​​with the scent of orange blossom, amber or musk, a practice that is no longer used today.

As "Viúvas de Braga" são um doce tradicional de Braga que se perdeu com o avançar dos tempos, mas que cuja receita foi recuperada através da investigação histórica.

As “viúvas” têm origem no antigo Convento dos Remédios. As freiras franciscanas fabricavam estes e muitos outros bolos, sem nunca revelar a receitar, descoberta mais tarde nos registos dos gastos da cozinha. Entre os ingredientes normais de um bolo, as “viúvas” eram feitas com aroma a flor de laranjeira, a âmbar ou a almíscar, uma prática que já não é utilizada nos dias de hoje.
