Gastronomy: Blood Orange

Known as blood orange, it is a fruit that scares anyone who sees it for the first time. What looks like a normal orange out, reveals a red interior, which is where the name comes from.

The color inside varies between darker and lighter red, depending on several things like the sunlight it receives, the weather, etc., and derives from a common pigment in nature but rare in citrus. Sometimes the outer registers a darker tone than the "usual" orange.

It is slightly smaller than a medium orange and has several health benefits. It can be used for milkshakes, pastries, ice cream, as any other fruit.

The Douro is one of the regions offering this product which is not always pleasing to look at, but always pleases the palate.

Conhecida como laranja sanguínea, ou laranja-de-sangue, é um fruto que assusta quem o vê pela primeira vez. O que parece uma laranja normal por fora, revela um interior vermelho, razão pela qual se lhe atribuiu o nome.

A cor de dentro varia entre vermelhos mais escuros e mais claros, dependendo de várias coisas, como a luz do sol que recebe, o clima, etc., e deriva de um pigmento comum na natureza, mas raro nos citrinos. Por vezes, o exterior regista um tom mais escuro do que a laranja “habitual”.

É ligeiramente mais pequena do que as laranjas médias e tem vários benefícios para a saúde. Pode ser usada para batidos, pastelaria, gelados, tal como outro fruto qualquer.
