Gastronomy: Olive oil

Olive oil is one of the most important products of the Douro region. It represents a significant source of income and is appreciated not only in Portugal, but also in other countries, where it is exported.

The olive picking is made between December and January (as long as there are no climate complications). It is not easy to do because of the mountainous Douro vineyards makes the process lengthy but worthwhile, since this golden liquid is very good for your health and it is used in any Portuguese table.

The restaurant “Homem do Leme” reflects the tranquility of Foz, with terraces near the beach. Most ingredients of the menu come from the sea. The freshness of the fish is unrivaled and the dishes are based on that. The view from this restaurant is amazing and can captivate anyone. Enjoy.

Patrimony: Barco Rabelo

Source: http://absguedes.blogspot.pt/2012/10/o-barco-rabelo.html

The Barco Rabelo is currently only used for touristic boat tours in Douro River. These trips can be very nice and relaxing but, in its origin, this typical vessel served to transport Porto wine from Douro, from the vineyards to the site where it was stored and sold later.

Again for the meat lovers, Tripas à Moda do Porto are a specialty. If you like beans, sausages, casings and different types of meat, you can’t miss this dish. According to the legend, this dish appeared in the period of discoveries when Prince Henry (Infante D.Henrique) asked the inhabitants of Oporto to gather all sorts of food. The population was left only with the offal and tripe. So this dish appeared. That’s why the habitants of Oporto are called Tripeiros!

If you like meat and sausages, the “francesinha” will make you love this sandwich as much as any citizen from Oporto. In 2011, the American magazine AOL Travel considered it as one of the ten best sandwiches in the world. This dish is mainly known for its characteristic sauce. Thanks to it, there are a lot more dishes made with this sauce in Oporto. It is impossible to explain the explosion of flavors of the “francesinha”, but it is almost mandatory that you check it. The “francesinha” is best served with the view of Douro river.
